Thaksin should take 'economic role'

A majority of people think former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's role in Thai society should be on solving economic problems rather than on resolving political conflict, according to the results of an Abac poll revealed on Sunday.

The poll was conducted between Jan 7-12 on 2,071 people in Bangkok, Phetchaburi, Saraburi, Nakhon Pathom, Chon Buri, Kamphaeng Phet, Phetchabun, Chiang Mai, Maha Sarakham, Roi-et, Nakhon Ratchasima, Loei, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani, Narathiwat, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla.

Asked whether conflict in society would end if Thaksin was excluded from being involved in solving problems, 52.7% said "no" and 47.3% said "yes".

Asked what role Thaksin should take in Thai society, 67.9% said he should be solving economic problems by such things as inviting foreign investors to the country - 32.1% said he should help solve political problems to reduce conflict.

Asked which group was bigger, those exploiting Thaksin for power and prosperity or those loyal to him, 56.1% said the former and 43.9% said the latter.

Most, or 82.6%, of the respondents believed conflict in society could be solved through democratic means.

On the Preah Vehear dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, 70.1% said it should be decided through the justice system while 29.9% thought the people should have a bigger say on the issue.

A majority or 66.8% said the two countries in dispute should set up a committee to study ways of using the temple for joint development.
