Facebook outage worldwide

When trying to login, Facebook's 1.28 billion monthly users were presented with the message: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can". The outage occurred early Thursday morning Europe time and in the afternoon Thai time.

Users quickly switched to Twitter to find out what was happening where they quickly met many other bemused facebook users also trying to find out what had happened.

The outage or service disruption apparently lasted for around 25 to 30 minutes.

While Facebook has seen outages before, Thursday's disruption appeared to be more widespread than previous outages, affecting the web-based version, mobile apps around the world.

According to the Guardian newspaper in the UK: "The last major outage to hit Facebook occurred in 2010 when the site was unreachable for 2.5 hours, the worst for four years. The 2010 failure was due to a server error that caused Facebook's automated systems to corrupt services and cause more damage than it could fix."

In a statement sent to the Guardian Facebook stated that: "Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."
