'6 days of darkness' hoax reaches Thailand
It's not true, but a lot of people here and abroad apparently believe the story that the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) had confirmed the Earth would be darkened for six days starting December 16 because of effects of a solar storm.
The story actually began on the humorous/satirical website huzlers.com which claimed that NASA had "confirmed that the Earth will experience 6 days of almost complete darkness."
The website went on to claim that "this will be the product of a solar storm, the largest in the last 250 years, for a period of 216 hours total."
As its source, the website cited head of NASA Charles Bolden who had asked everyone to "remain calm".
What the website failed to mention, however, was that Mr Bolden was speaking three years ago, not about a solar storm, but about how families should prepare for emergencies.
With our modern social media, however, the Huzler story was reported as fact around the world. The rumours of a sunless six days became so intense that NASA itself had to post a denial on its Facebook page.

NASA's denial.
