50 inmates transferred to "Super Max"
Almost 50 inmates suspected of dealing drugs from behind bars are being transferred to a maximum-security zone at Khao Bin Central Prison in Ratchaburi.
The department moved the inmates as part of plans to clamp down on the convicts' involvement in drug dealing, said Vitaya Suriyawong, director-general of the Corrections Department, who signed the transfer order on Tuesday.
The department has worked with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board and the Royal Thai Police's Narcotics Suppression Bureau to monitor phone calls among inmates and gather intelligence from informants to corral "big name" dealers. He said earlier the department had collected about 1,000 names, but the first group of those transferred came to just 49.
The maximum security zone in Khao Bin can take up to 400 prisoners. The department expects to transfer more inmates to the zone soon. The maximum-security area is equipped with solitary confinement cells where communication between inmates and prison staff is tightly regulated.
The government previously issued a mandate to eradicate the drug trade in prisons, an order which resulted in prison raids last year.
Many items were confiscated during the crackdown between June 9 to December 9. They included 6,703 mobile phones, 24,767 speed pills, 2,839 grammes of crystal methamphetamine and six grammes of marijuana.
