I'm a little old for this, but I live down the road on Ekamai and writer Catherine Faulder has got me interested. Here is an excerpt from her story in today's story Guru Magazine.

On the spot inspiration

Catherine Faulder

If you’re an Ekamai regular, you may have already seen those sexy street dancers dropping hot-as-funk moves in front of Ekamai Gateway’s plaza, moving to the sound of funk, from ‘70s, ghetto and electro to boogie and hip hop, blasting from DJ Rory Breaker-Morant’s (aka DJ Pornstache) wheels of steel. No dancer myself (apart from in the bathroom when no one’s looking), I was a bit intimidated when I first stepped into a Sunday session at We Got The Spot (WGTS).

My minimal understanding of dance was immediately enriched. Zac Alcampo, a locking pro and founder of WGTS, introduced me to the different styles of street dance I knew pretty much zilch about: krumping, tricking, popping, locking, waacking, B-Boying or breaking, house, dancehall and hip hop, to name a few. My head was already popping, waacking and hip hopping with all these new words.

It's fun.

What I really love about WGTS is that every time I go, I’m not made to feel as though I have two left feet. There is a genuinely inclusive vibe inviting all people, whether they can dance or not, to join in.

“The Bangkok street dance scene is young, spread out and fragmented,” explains Alcampo. “When I set WGTS up, I wanted to change that. I wanted a space where we could all come together, practise, develop as dancers and share ourselves, a space where people had more in common with each other than not — and selfishly, I just wanted a reliable and regular spot to train!”

If you’re already a brilliant dancer, great, go there to improve and learn from other dancers. If you’re not a dancer and want to be one, no problem, everyone there is willing to teach you what they know, with absolutely zero judgement. WGTS’s motto is “Each One: Reach One: Teach one” and boy do they stick to it. Reach out to any one of the dancers at the spot and I guarantee you they will drizzle you with their enthusiasm for dancing. In fact, reach out to anyone who goes to the spot, dancer or not, and they will drizzle you with their enthusiasm for the talent they meditate with. And what’s your hidden talent? Why not go there and teach it?

That takes strength.

Honestly, everyone at the spot goes there to do what they love. Don’t like dancing at all and don’t want to think about ever wanting to do so? Then do you write? Paint? Sketch? Draw? Do you enjoy music or have a burning desire to learn how to DJ? Are you a budding photographer? Do you like taking really cool selfies? V-blogging? Snap chatting? Do you like hanging out? Do you like eating? People-watching? Laughing? Still no? OK, do you breathe?

Guaranteed, if you spend even an hour here on a Sunday night (sessions run from 6:30-9:30pm) you will be inundated with inspiration that will in the very least give you something interesting to talk about at work. If you’re really blown away by WGTS, you can attend its Thursday sessions — same time, same place.
