A train bound for Sungai Kolok arrived with an extra passenger on Wednesday, when nature called on a pregnant woman to deliver her child during the journey.

The National Institute for Emergency Medicine and rescuers of the Mae Kor Niew Foundation received a call from Thawatchai Srinual, a State Railway of Thailand (SRT) official  at Yala station informing them a passenger on an arriving train was about to have a baby.

Rapid train No.171 stopped at Yala station, waiting for nurses from Yala General Hospital and rescuers. They took about 15 minutes to help Yasmi Samuding give birth to a healthy boy, with railway police and station staff on hand to provide any other needed assistance.

The boy weighed in at 3.2 kilogrammes. He and the 22-year-old mother were taken to hospital for further care.

Mrs Yasmi said she boarded the train with her husband at Surat Thani station, en route to Sungai Kolok,  the border district with Malaysia in Narathiwat. As the train approached Yala she had alerted a railway official on board that she was in labour and about to give birth.

The official then contacted the station, which made preparations for the delivery.

The SRT posted a message on its Facebook account expressing its appreciation to everybody who helped the young woman.

Many followers on Facebook agreed the baby boy should be nicknamed "Nong Train".

The train left Bangkok at 1pm on Tuesday and arrived at Yala at 8.46am on Wednesday. After the brief delay it continued its journey to Sungai Kolok.
