Bangkok Air puts faith in cartoon mascots

Bangkok Airways reckons cartoon mascots could be an effective marketing tool to induce youngsters to become customers for an airline whose typical clientele range from 30 to 50.

The airline hopes using cartoon characters for the first time in its 45-year history will help it portray a rejuvenated image for a company that has long been perceived as conservative.

Bangkok Air’s five mascots will be developed into sellable products and later developed into an animated series that will run on its in-flight entertainment systems and in its lounges.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, the airline’s president, said the mascots would be instrumental in expanding its client base to kids and teens.

The mascots are based on actual aircraft in the airline’s fleet, with different motifs to reflect the destinations it serves.

These characters come in pleasing designs and colours to youngsters, said Capt Puttipong.

Each mascot will have a unique character: Sky is active, confident, lively and fast; Sunshine is joyful, humble and cute; Rocky is reserved, strong and warm; Windy is playful, courteous and talkative; and Daisy is naughty and playful, says the airline.

There are 21 aircraft in Bangkok Airways’ current fleet, consisting of eight ATR-72 turboprops, five A320 jets and eight A319s.

It expects to take delivery of three new jetliners — two A320s and one A319 — in the third or fourth quarter.

Last year the airline carried 3.6 million passengers, with 75% foreigners and 25% locals.

It plans to launch an initial public offering in the next few months to raise billions of baht to build a hangar at Suvarnabhumi from scratch, buy a number of new aircraft, lease other aircraft and improve its IT system.
