POST REPORTERS

Six people were killed and two others injured in a road accident involving three vehicles and three wild elephants in Rayong province yesterday. One of the elephants, a male, was also killed.

Pol Capt Thanet Piumsorasak, duty officer at Wang Chan police station, said the accident occurred about 5am. A white Mitsubishi Pajero hit one of the elephants as they were crossing the Ban Bung-Klaeng road in tambon Payubnai.

The area is near the Khao Anglunai Wildlife Reserve, next to Khao Chamao National Park and the heavily forested Cambodian border. The vehicle was carrying four people and hurtled off the road on impact with the elephant.

The male driver and a female passenger died at the scene. The others later died in Wang Chan Hospital.

Shortly after the first crash, a six-wheel Isuzu truck approached the scene and attempted to drive around it, but a bronze Toyota Vigo pickup, with a Chanthaburi licence plate, rammed into the back of the vehicle.

The driver of the pickup also died at the scene. Three other passengers, a man and two women, were injured. One died from her injuries in Wang Chan Hospital.

The driver of the six-wheel truck, Singhyutthakarn Virophrom, was unhurt. He told police he had been delivering fertiliser from Bangkok to Chanthaburi.
