The army will impound the vehicles of motorists found drinking and driving during the New Year holidays, it said yesterday.

The military regime is trying to curb the high number of accidents and fatalities that occur during public holidays.

Anyone who is found drink driving risks losing their vehicle, army chief Gen Theerachai Nakvanich, who also serves as chief of the Peace and Order Maintaining Command, said yesterday.

Offenders can retrieve their vehicles after the holiday ends, he said.

Gen Theerachai said military checkpoints will be set up across the country to look for drink drivers, particularly motorcyclists.

Village headmen and kamnans have also been authorised to impound vehicles if motorists are found intoxicated.

Public transport vehicle drivers risk having their licences suspended.

Legal action will also be taken against public transport operators.

"Taking care of people is considered a New Year's gift to Thais. If anyone drinks alcohol, they must not cause problems for others," Gen Theerachai said.

Villagers are being encouraged not to travel far to attend New Year parties, he said.

In Bangkok, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered authorities to strictly enforce anti-drink driving measures, especially in areas where entertainment venues are located.

Gen Theerachai said the army has told hospitals under its supervision to work closely with the Public Health Ministry to ensure sufficient blood supplies are available for injured people during the holiday.

"Officials are working closely to improve safety and look after the injured. However, it would be better if there were no accidents at all," he said.

Gen Theerachai asked the public to show understanding with law enforcement officials if they are deprived of their vehicles and licences.
