Olympics: Glittering ceremony launches Rio Games
Rio de Janeiro, AFP – Fireworks and laser-lit choreography launched the Rio Games on Friday as Brazil sought to forget seven years of troubled preparations.
In a welcome change from the extravagance seen at recent Olympic ceremonies, the Rio de Janeiro Games began Friday with a tasteful simplicity.

Rio created a ceremony that replaced the giant structures seen in London, and the mass of humanity from Beijing, with a stadium floor used as a screen to set scenes from the Amazon to Rio's urban jungle, but brought to life by something unmistakably Brazilian – dance.

Organisers said the ceremony aimed to send a message of tolerance and respect. But it came as Brazil battles a crippling recession, double-digit unemployment, rising crime and political turmoil.
