Canal boats: Trial run along downtown Bangkok canal

A trial run has begun of a new passenger boat service along Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem canal to help commuters and relieve congestion on Bangkok's roads.

The service is operated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

trial services began on Monday morning on a 5-kilometre route of Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem between Hua Lamphong and Thewes, according to Suthon Anakul, deputy director of the BMA's Traffic and Transport Department. 

NEW CANAL BOAT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICE

There are nine piers along the new route:

1. Hua Lamphong.

2. Noppawong.

3.Yosse.

4. Energy Ministry.

5. Lan Luang.

6. Nakhon Sawan.

7. Ratchadamnern Nok.

8. Prachathipatai, and...

9. Thewes.

During the first stage of the trial, four 12-seat boats will be in service.

The boats were originally used by the Drainage and Sewerage Department and have been modified and fitted with roofs, seats and safety equipment.

On Monday-Friday, the boats will operate during two periods, from 6am-9am and 4pm-8pm.

The boats will be dispatched at 20-minute intervals.

The service will operate from 8am-8pm on Saturday and Sunday, at 30-minute intervals. 

During the trial period, the ferry service is free of charge.

The official servce, with more boats, is planned to begin in March next year.
