A big language challenge

This will be a real challenge for learners of Thai – and if you are learning to translate Thai to English it might be a challenge for you too. As soon as I heard the controversial Aum Neko talking on this Bangkok Post video, I was reminded of my early days learning the language. I found young the younger generation, women in particular, to be almost impossible to understand, especially when they were talking among themselves. There was something about the speed at which they spoke, and the informal language they used – it was a sound blur to me.

Unless your listening skills are very good, much of what Aum says will likely be a blur to you as well. That is why I asked Archarn Sunee to do a complete transcript. I have also attempted a full translation  since the subtitles with the video are very sketchy. If you are learning Thai, I suggest you listen several times. If you can understand Aum, you can understand just about any one.

Aum Neko, of course, was a news item not so long ago for posters she and fellow Thammasart University students made picturing simulated sex acts. Here she explains what led her to do this.

Note: I guess I have to mention that Aum is a transgender, although you wouldn't realise it from just watching the video.

วิชานี้อ่ะค่ะ TR 130 สหวิทยาการและวิทยาศาสตร์เทคโนโลยี มีการบังคับให้นักศึกษาต้องแต่งชุดนักศึกษาตลอดระยะเวลาที่มีมา แล้วก็ถ้าหากคุณไม่แต่งกายชุดนักศึกษา ต่อให้คุณแต่งกายเรียบร้อยเพียงใด ทางคณะหรือทางที่จัดวิชานี้ก็จะไม่จัดใบควิซให้กับคุณ ซึ่งการที่คุณไม่ได้ใบควิซ ก็เท่ากับคุณไม่ได้เช็คชื่อหรือคุณอาจจะไม่ได้เข้าสอบ คือสูญเสียคะแนนส่วนนี้ไป แต่เรากลับไม่สามารถออกมาต่อต้านการที่ทางวิชานี้กำลังทำอำนาจผิดกฎของมหาวิทยาลัยอยู่เอง กลับกลายเป็นว่า การที่เราออกมากลายเป็นสิ่งที่ผิด เป็นอาชญากรทางความคิด และอีกประเด็นก็คือว่า ม.ธรรมศาสตร์ที่ซึ่งเราบอกกันว่ามีเสรีภาพทุกตารางนิ้วและเป็นดินแดนของประชาธิปไตย และเป็นต้นกำเนิดของ มธก ก็ไม่ได้มีชุดนักศึกษามาตั้งแต่แรกเริ่ม เพิ่งจะมามีตอนยุครัฐบาลของถนอม กิตติขจร กลับกลายเป็นว่าปัจจุบันนี้ คำว่าเสรีภาพที่มีทุกตารางนิ้วนั้นไม่มีอยู่จริง

ถ้าคุณให้สิทธิแก่นักศึกษาในการเลือกว่าจะแต่งชุดสุภาพหรือแต่งชุดนักศึกษา คุณก็ต้องนำบรรทัดฐานนี้ไปใช้กับการเข้าสอบด้วย ไม่ใช่การแต่งชุดนักศึกษาเข้าสอบ

ไอเดียที่เราทำโปสเตอร์นี่ ก็คือว่า เราใช้เรื่องเซ็กส์ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่สังคมยังรับไม่ได้ ยังเป็นสิ่งที่สังคมน่ะ..คิดว่ามนุษย์หรือใครก็ตามในประเทศไทยไม่ควรแสดงออกเรื่องเซ็กส์ในที่โจ่งแจ้ง เป็นสิ่งที่เป็นตาบูของสังคม แต่ว่าชุดนักศึกษาในทางกลับกันอ่ะค่ะ ชุดนักศึกษาเป็นเหมือนภาพแทนหรือเป็นสิ่งที่บอกว่าคนที่ใส่ชุดนักศึกษาจะเป็นคนดี มีศีลธรรม มีระเบียบวินัย เป็นสิ่งที่สังคมยอมรับได้ กลายเป็นมีภาพขาวและดำเกิดขึ้นในสังคมไทย ดังนั้นโปสเตอร์หลายๆรูปที่แสดงความ "ฟิน" แสดงรูปที่เหมือนจะร่วมเพศแต่ไม่ได้ร่วมเพศจริงนะคะ ที่แสดงความ "ฟิน" ออกมาภายใต้การถูกบังคับในชุดนักศึกษาก็เป็นการบอกว่า ต่อให้ชุดนักศึกษามันควบคุมร่างกายคุณ มันควบคุมพฤติกรรม ความคิด ควบคุมความเป็นมนุษย์ของคุณอยู่ภายนอก แต่มันไม่สามารถบังคับสิ่งที่อยู่ภายในหรือ อินเนอร์ ของความเป็นมนุษย์ของเราได้ คุณควบคุมเราได้เพียงร่างกาย แต่สิ่งที่อยู่ภายใน สิ่งที่เป็นมนุษย์มันกำลังจะถูกปลดแอกออกมา 

เหมือนกับการที่ดิฉันบอกว่า ดิฉันไม่อยากจะใส่ชุดนักศึกษา ไม่ได้หมายความว่าดิฉันจะยกเลิก หรือบังคับให้คนอื่นต้องไม่ใส่ชุดนักศึกษาเหมือนดิฉัน แต่การเปิดพื้นที่จะ "ราวด์" ทำความเข้าใจจากคนที่ไม่อยากใส่ชุดนักศึกษา เพราะบางทีเขาก็ไม่ได้คิดว่าชุดนักศึกษาจะสามารถชี้วัดความสำเร็จ ชี้วัดสติปัญญาและความเป็นมนุษย์ของเขาได้

พอเราพูดถึงเรื่องเราไม่อยากใส่ชุดนักศึกษา สังคมตีตรา ประณามเรา กดขี่ทางเพศเรา หาว่าเราจะไปมีผัว ยัดเยียด กดขี่ความเป็นเพศหญิงว่า แม่ผู้หญิงอยากจะแต่งกายและใช้สิทธิ์ของเขา   กลายเป็นว่าเพศหญิงกำลัง "ร่าน" เสรีภาพ ร่านสิทธิ อยากจะไปมีผัว ดิฉันคิดว่าการเรียกร้องของดิฉันไม่ได้ไปละเมิดสิทธิของผู้อื่นแน่ๆ  เพราะคุณมีสิทธิ์ที่จะชอบหรือไม่ชอบได้ เราไม่ได้บังคับ  คุณจะไม่พอใจหรือพอใจ ก็เป็นความคิดทางปัจเจกบุคคล แต่คุณก็ไม่มีสิทธิ์เอาความไม่พอใจของคุณมาบังคับให้เราต้องทำให้คุณพอใจเหมือนกันหมด ไม่งั้นมันก็ไม่ใช่สังคมประชาธิปไตยที่อุดมไปด้วยสีสันแห่งความสวยงามว่าด้วยความแตกต่างและหลากหลายทางความคิด...ค่

Now the English

My name…the (nick) name people know me as is Aum Neko, my Facebook name. People know me for coming out and campaigning on (issues concerning) politics and society. Currently I am a second year student in the Faculty of Arts at Thammasart University majoring in German.

From the time I was a child, I never liked school administrators cutting or shaving my hair or being forced to wear a school uniform, (a system where) short pants are not allowed, pants are cut or many things like that. There is no reason to it other than the claim that a school uniform creates a society with discipline. But we see adults in society throwing chairs at each other. They have gone through the same socialization process – hair styles, school uniforms. I don’t see much discipline as a result.

(It's this subject) TU 130, or Integrated Science and Technology, (that) has the requirement that students must wear student uniforms the entire time. If you don’t wear a uniform no matter how neatly you dress, the faculty or the class will not provide you with exam papers. If you don’t get an exam paper, it is the same as if you didn’t sign your name or you didn’t attend the examination. This means you lose these marks. Yet we are unable to come out and oppose the fact that this course is using authority which is against university regulations. Instead, our action becomes the thing that is deemed wrong and we become a “criminal of thought”. Another issue that we say Thammasart University has freedom throughout every square inch (of its campus), it is a land of democracy. At the founding (origin) of the University of Political and Moral Sciences (มธก), there were no uniforms from the start. That only came in during the government of General Thanon Kittikachorn. So now that “freedom throughout every square inch” no longer exists.

If you give students the right to choose whether to dress politely or to wear a student uniform, you need to apply this standard to the right to take the examination as well, not to require only the uniform for the exam.

The idea for the poster we did...We used the subject of sex because that is something society still can't accept. It is still something that society thinks people or anyone within Thailand shouldn’t show off openly. It is something that is taboo in our society. But the student uniform on the other hand, the school uniform presents an image or is something that indicates the person wearing the school uniform is a good person, a person who has morality and discipline, something the society can accept. It becomes a black and white issue in Thai society. So many of the pictures in our posters are extremely explicit, seeming to show sexual acts but acts which were only simulated, which show sexual satisfaction coming out even while being forced to wear school uniforms which is saying that a uniform restricts or controls your body, your behaviour, your thoughts, your humanity on the outside, but it cannot control our inner being or humanity. You can only control our bodies, but what is on the inside, the things that make us human, will be liberated.  

It is the same as what I said that I don't want to wear a school uniform. This doesn't mean I would cancel or revoke their use or that I would force others not to wear them like myself, but to open a space for people trying to understand those who do not want to wear school uniforms or people who think that a uniform indicates a person's success, intelligence or humanity.

When we broached the subject that we didn't want to wear school uniforms, society branded and condemned us, saying we just wanted to go get a husband. They abuse our womanhood.  Women just desire to get dressed up and exercise their rights.

Instead it becomes that a women craves (lusts after) freedom, rights, she wants to have a husband. I think that my demands do not infringe on the rights of others for sure, but because you have the right to like or dislike (what I demand, I'm not forcing you. You can be satisfied or dissatisfied. It is your opinion as an individual person. But at the same time you don't have the right to take your dissatisfaction and force us to make you satisfied. Otherwise that would not be a fully democratic society with the colour and beauty of differences and variety of thought.
